While Ubuntu did much better with POV-Ray, the FreeBSD operating systems did much better with the C-Ray ray-tracing engine. It took 64 seconds to ray-trace our demo under Ubuntu, but just 49 seconds for both FreeBSD 7.2 and 8.0-RC.

Turning to John The Ripper and looking at the MD5 performance, the results between all three free software operating systems were close with no definitive winner.

With the Blowfish performance in John The Ripper, the results remained close, but Ubuntu 9.10 began pulling out in front.
