The other Phoronix Test Suite self tests were close.

Caffe didn't run on all of the tested distributions due to some dependencies/versions being unmet. But between Ubuntu and Clear Linux, Intel's distribution was multiple times faster than Ubuntu. Clear Linux has invested a lot into optimizing their platform for machine learning / deep learning and related workloads by shipping an optimized OpenCV implementation, choosing the most performant BLAS implementation, and other enhancements.

It's interesting though to see how much slower Ubuntu 16.10 is running Caffe than Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS.

Additionally, with Python SciKit-Learn, Ubuntu 16.10 is much slower than the current Ubuntu LTS release. Clear Linux remained much faster in this test too.

Those wanting to poke through more of this data can find all of the information and details via OpenBenchmarking.org and you can also run your own comparisons with the same tests/configurations using the Phoronix Test Suite.
