While any modern graphics card can run OpenArena with ease, the results still show the Radeon R9 290 performing disappointing under Linux. Even the GeForce GTX 760 was delivering superior results to the R9 290.
The Catalyst driver appears to have some serious issues with Nexuiuz. There's clearly a problem with the Radeon R9 290 on Linux was only running a little bit faster than a NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX!
Hopefully we'll see a higher-quality Catalyst Linux driver out in 2014. On the NVIDIA side at least their GeForce 700 series graphics cards are running fantastic with the binary driver. As the test results recently showed, the NVIDIA Linux performance is very similar to the Windows results. For those concerned about just the open-source GPU driver performance on Linux, see that 21-way comparison, where at least the Radeon GPUs are more competitive than the open-source reverse-engineered Nouveau driver for GeForce GPUs. Also of interest would be the new Ultra HD 4K resolution Linux GPU/driver testing.
Stay tuned for many more interesting Linux benchmarks in December.
