Right from the start Kubuntu 9.04 was ahead of PC-BSD 7.1 by a noticeable margin in the timed ImageMagick compilation task. Keep in mind, however, PC-BSD/FreeBSD is using the older GCC 4.2 branch while Kubuntu 9.04 is using GCC 4.3.

The LAME MP3 encoding performance was close between PC-BSD and Kubuntu.

Kubuntu 9.04 had a moderate lead over PC-BSD 7.1 in the 7-Zip compression test. The Canonical operating system was approximately 10% faster.

When it came to compressing a 2GB file using Gzip, Kubuntu with its EXT3 file-system was faster by about five and a half seconds.
