FreeBSD/PC-BSD 9.1 Benchmarked Against Linux, Solaris, BSD
CentOS 6.3 and Ubuntu 12.10/13.04 carried a definite lead over Solaris, PC-BSD, and DragonFlyBSD for this computational Poisson Pressure Solver workload. This was even when PC-BSD was using GCC 4.7 just like in the modern Ubuntu Linux releases that were benchmarked.
There wasn't much difference in the compilation speed aside from Oracle's Solaris Express 11.1 being incredibly slow compared to the 64-bit Linux and BSD operating systems.
For C-Ray, our multi-threaded ray-tracing test favorite, Solaris Express 11.1 was again the distant loser. Meanwhile the performance between DragonFlyBSD 3.0.3, CentOS 6.3, and Ubuntu 12.10 were close. Effectively tied for first were PC-BSD 9.1 and Ubuntu 13.04.
Last there, there's not much to see out of the dcraw imaging application benchmark or the N-Queens CPU benchmark.
Stay tuned for more FreeBSD/PC-BSD 9.1 benchmarks going into the new year.
