Ubuntu 10.10 Is The Maverick Meerkat

Posted by Michael Larabel on April 02, 2010

We already know the Ubuntu 10.10 release schedule (with the official release coming on the 28th of October), but now we know the codename for this Ubuntu 10.04 LTS successor. Ubuntu 10.10 is being named the "Maverick Meerkat", according to a blog post this morning by Mark Shuttleworth.

The Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" release will not be out for a few weeks still, but it's time to start thinking about Ubuntu 10.10 and what it will bring to the table for the Linux desktop, mobile devices, servers / virtualization, and much more.

From Mark's blog post it looks like he and Canonical will be pushing for greater social networking integration within Ubuntu, continued speed improvements for netbooks / mobile devices with a speedy Internet experience, and more. "Meerkats are, of course, light, fast and social – everything we want in a Perfect 10."

The Maverick Meerkat (Ubuntu 10.10) will likely be running with GNOME 3.0, X.Org Server 1.8 (though we hope X Server 1.9 will be ready and included in time), the Linux 2.6.34 or 2.6.35 kernel (hopefully the latter), GCC 4.5, and many other package updates.
