Unigine Heaven Linux Release Pushed Back

Posted by Michael Larabel on December 28, 2009

Back in October Unigine Heaven was released for Microsoft Windows 7 with its DirectX 11.0 renderer, but there was no Linux client to be found. This was not because Unigine Corp is liking the Linux platform any less, but because none of the Linux graphics drivers could simply handle the complexities of this technology demo and rendering its OpenGL 3.2 implementation correctly.

Unigine Corp did share though with us that in November or December there will be an update for the Catalyst Linux drivers that will hopefully run with this game well -- even when using a Radeon HD 5000 series graphics card with the hardware tessellation being exposed through OpenGL 3.2. Since then, we along with many Linux gamers and enthusiasts have been waiting. Earlier in December we then shared that Heaven may be released the week of Christmas now that the Catalyst 9.12 driver was out, but its tessellation support ended up being buggy still.

Unigine Corp this morning has confirmed they will now be holding off on the Linux release of their Heaven demo until at least January when Catalyst 10.1 is released. Unigine Corp is all set on their end, but they simply need AMD to deliver a working driver so that this very impressive demo (we have ran it internally) can be released.
