Game Developer Who Ported To Linux: "I Don't Think It Was Worthwhile"
An RPG game developer behind the Pillars of Eternity title mentioned during PAX Prime this weekend that it really wasn't worthwhile porting their game to Linux.
Pillars of Eternity developers at PAX Prime in Seattle didn't have much good to say about Linux this weekend. From their perspective, it wasn't worthwhile developing for Linux and "They are a very, very small portion of our active user base—I think around one and a half percent of our users were Linux."
This RPG game is powered by the Unity Engine but it still wasn't a trivial experience in bringing the game over. At the end of the day, it doesn't sound like this crowd-funded role playing game by Obsidian was worthwhile. With 1.5% of their users being on Linux, it's actually slightly higher than the current Steam Linux marketshare of just less than 1%. Yes, it's sad, but hopefully it will improve once SteamOS and Steam Machines begin rolling out. Until then, given all the Linux graphics driver issues and other problems, there isn't any compelling reason for most, normal PC users to make the switch.
