Not much has changed since the last time the Oracle VirtualBox graphics performance was tested at Phoronix. There is a huge penalty to using the VirtualBox 3D graphics driver; even the non-graphically-demanding OpenArena game cannot run at a playable frame-rate within VirtualBox on this notebook bearing NVIDIA GeForce GTX 540M graphics backed by the Linux binary driver.

World of Padman's performance in VirtualBox also remained a mess. Even as the resolution increased, the frame-rate within the VirtualBox guest did not, which is likely signifying a compute bottleneck within the VirtualBox stack.

At least there is support for 2D/3D acceleration for VirtualBox guests, compared to QEMU/KVM still lacking such support for passing calls to the host's graphics stack, but its performance leaves a lot to be desired.
