When carrying out other tasks like encoding an audio file with LAME, there really isn't a performance difference with just reading about a 60MB WAV file and then writing the resulting MP3.

Encoding a single video file also hadn't resulted in any significant performance difference.

Moving back to another heavy disk test, GnuPG was significantly impacted by the home directory encryption. An additional 21 seconds was required, or 26% more time, to encrypt a 2GB file when already running on eCryptfs.
