Ubuntu 9.04 Receives EXT4 Support

Last month we delivered real-world benchmarks of the EXT4 file-system on a workstation running Fedora with the Linux 2.6.27 kernel, but for this article we are running a new set of tests with Ubuntu 9.04. Ubuntu 9.04 is currently made up of the Linux 2.6.28 kernel, GNOME 2.25.4, X.Org Server 1.5.99.3, xf86-video-intel 2.5.1, Mesa 7.3-devel, and GCC 4.3.3. All software was left in its stock configuration. On the hardware side we were using the Samsung NC10 netbook, which was using an Intel Atom N270 processor, 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 32GB OCZ Core Series V2 SSD, and integrated Intel graphics.

For our Ubuntu EXT4 benchmarking we compared the performance to the EXT3, ReiserFS, XFS, and JFS file-systems. All of our benchmarks were powered by the Phoronix Test Suite, which is our open-source testing platform supported on Linux, OpenSolaris, Mac OS X, and FreeBSD operating systems. The tests carried out included GnuPG file encryption, Sunflow Rendering System, Bork File Encrypter, IOzone, and the Flexible IO Tester.
