The only cases with modern 64-bit-capable hardware where using x86 would just be preferred if using 2GB or less of system memory. However, for nearly all other systems with Linux CPU workloads, the 64-bit builds will be faster due to access to more registers, assuming SSE instruction support, a larger virtual address space, etc.
