Ubuntu 12.10 Is Faster With Intel Hardware
Beginning this Intel Ivy Bridge testing under Ubuntu 12.04 vs. 12.10 are the OpenGL benchmarks for the integrated graphics.
Right off the bat with Lightsmark we see a nice performance boost out of the Ubuntu 12.10 packages. The OpenGL performance improvement for Ivy Bridge in Ubuntu 12.10 comes largely because of the kernel upgrade from Linux 3.2 to Linux 3.5 and the changes made during that development span. Ubuntu 12.10 has yet to pull in the latest Mesa 8.1/9.0 code, which should be out next month and may yield some additional performance boosts before Quetzal's debut along with greater OpenGL coverage.
The Nexuiz frame-rate was also bumped up for this CompuLab x86_64 setup on Ubuntu 12.10.
OpenArena benefited from the Ubuntu 12.04 updates due to the landing of the Unity fixes, but the performance goes up even more with Ubuntu 12.10.
