Radeon Gallium3D Improvements Compared To Legacy Catalyst

The R600g driver found "out of the box" in Ubuntu 12.10 wouldn't even run Doom 3 or Prey or Unigine, but it does now with the latest driver code. While R600 Gallium3D has matured incredibly, the performance still isn't close to matching the Catalyst Linux driver in more demanding OpenGL workloads.

The open-source Radeon Gallium3D driver has matured a whole lot, but if you were hoping for a Radeon HD 4870 that it's now met parity to the Catalyst Legacy driver from last year, that isn't the case. Your only choice on modern Linux distributions is really to use the R600g driver with Catalyst Legacy updates not being common, but the performance isn't to match nor other features like advanced visual settings, an intuitive control center, CrossFire, etc.
