While C-Ray's performance had degraded with the newer distributions, the POV-Ray benchmark that also looks at the ray-tracing performance had improved. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 is more than 10% faster than CentOS 5.4 with this industry-standard benchmark. RHEL 6.0 was neck-and-neck with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 10.04.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 finally captured a secure first-place finish when it came to looking at the 7-Zip compression performance, which properly takes advantage of the AMD Opteron's eight cores. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 was 16% faster than the community 5.4 release, while it was also faster than Fedora and Ubuntu.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 Beta was running at the same speed of Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with the Parallel BZIP2 compression benchmark, but that too is regressed compared to the older CentOS 5.4 release using the EXT3 file-system with the Linux 2.6.18 kernel.

The newer distributions are faster with FLAC audio encoding than in CentOS 5.4.
