There's also the P-State vs. CPUfreq difference out-of-the-box too, but for these basic 2D workloads the biggest benefit in Ubuntu 14.10 is likely the greater tuned GLAMOR now within the X.Org Server and other open-source Radeon driver enhancements.

Besides the forthcoming Radeon Ubuntu 14.04 vs. 14.10 OpenGL benchmarks, coming up next week will also be similar tests done on the Intel and NVIDIA side to see how the performance changes for those upgrading to the Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn release of this week.
