Starting with the Austrian CoreBreach racing game that uses GNUstep, the Linux 3.4 kernel introduced about a 20% performance improvement and since then the numbers have slowly crept higher.

Doom 3 sees the performance begin at a mere 15 FPS for the 1920 x 1200 resolution at the start of the year with Linux 3.2 but with the Linux 3.6 Git code is now up 40% with the Linux 3.6 kernel.

The Lightsmark OpenGL performance is up about 45% over the course of the past five major Linux kernel releases.
