Intel Core i7 4960X Linux Performance

Our first open-source benchmark used across the nine AMD and Intel processors was Rodinia, the scientific compute-intensive accelerator test out of the University of Virginia. To no major surprise, the Intel Core i7 4960X was the fastest of the nine CPUs. The i7 4960X was significantly faster than the Core i7 3960X Sandy Bridge Extreme and also doing significantly better than the Core i7 4770K Haswell desktop processor.

With the LAMMPS Molecular Dynamics Simulator there was less of a spread than with Rodinia, but still the Core i7 4960X Ivy Bridge E was much better than the Core i7 3960X Sandy Bridge E and on par with the i7-4770K Haswell.

The HMMer scientific workload that searches for the domain structure of Drosophila Sevenless protein tends to have an advantage on AMD processors, but the eight-core FX-8350 Vishera still lost to Intel's six-core (plus HT) Core i7 4960X.
