First up with the scientific Dolfyn test, the Core i5 6600K performance came in just behind the Core i7 4790K and just ahead of the Core i7 5775C Broadwell. Not bad for a Core i5! The i7-4790K has a faster clock frequency (4.4GHz turbo, 4GHz base) plus is Hyper Threaded.

Under the FFTW benchmark built from source and optimized for each CPU test, the Core i5 6600 Skylake processor managed to even beat out the i7-4790K by a measurable margin along with the i7-5775C Broadwell.

The i5-6600K fell slightly behind the 4790K and 5775C with the HMMer scientific database search. It will be interesting to see how AMD Zen performs on Linux when that hardware is finally available, but until then, AMD still has no real competition to the Core i5/i7 Intel CPUs.
