While POV-Ray had an advantage on Linux, the multi-threaded C-Ray program was dramatically faster under FreeBSD. There was not much of a difference between the 8.0 and 8.1-RC2 releases, but FreeBSD definitely had the lead in this ray-tracing benchmark.

The Independence Day snapshot of Ubuntu 10.10 came out to take the lead with John The Ripper's Traditional DES test.

With our simple dcraw test of converting RAW image files to PPM image format, Ubuntu was also noticeably faster than running the same test under FreeBSD 8.
