ATI's 2D Performance With X.Org Server 1.9
With x11perf the 500px PutImage Square performance was largely unchanged.
The "char in 80-char aa line" performance was trying to inch ahead with X.Org Server 1.9.0 RC5 and the ATI Radeon driver stack.
The Render Bench performance was unchanged.
With the current open-source ATI Radeon driver stack for Linux the only form of GPU video acceleration that is usable is X-Video. There is not even XvMC support at this point in the open-source ATI driver or H.264 VA-API like was recently brought to the open-source Intel driver. At some point, there will be VDPAU or VA-API brought to the Gallium3D architecture in a state tracker, but we are not there yet. With the X-Video performance in xorg-server 1.9, like the Intel results, there was no change in CPU utilization compared to xorg-server 1.8.
In most of the 2D tests when looking for changes in performance brought by xorg-server 1.9, when there was a measurable change it ended up being positive. However, the simple blit operation in JXRenderMark had dramatically regressed with the R500 ASIC found in the Lenovo ThinkPad T60 and in some of the other tests there was no change at all. Stay tuned for the official release of X.Org Server 1.9.0 in the coming days.
