While the ATI Catalyst driver for Linux has been widely criticized in the past for its 2D performance, when using the X Render back-end with QGears2 for testing out the 2D Qt tool-kit, the ATI graphics cards came ahead. The ATI graphics cards with Catalyst 9.5 were about 35% faster with the gears test found in QGears2.

The Catalyst driver continued to lead when it came to the text testing operations within QGears2 with X Render. Here the ATI graphics cards and driver were faster by about 67% over NVIDIA's latest Linux beta driver!

With X Render and image scaling with QGears2, the GeForce 9800GT hedged some of its losses by performing slightly ahead of the Radeon HD 4770. The ATI and NVIDIA 2D performance was comparable in this test.
