Preview: AMD's FX-9590 Eight-Core At Up To 5.0GHz On Linux

With the Dolfyn scientific workload, the FX-9590 was obviously the fastest AMD CPU/APU tested and came in measurably ahead of the FX-8350... However, compared against the assortment of Haswell (and Ivy Bridge EE) CPUs it was struggling. For Dolfyn, even the Pentium G3258 CPU was faster than the high-end AMD Vishera with Piledriver cores.

With the Gcrypt benchmark, the FX-9590 was obviously the fastest AMD processor and its performance against the Intel Haswell CPUs came in ahead of the Core i3 4130 but behind the Core i5/i7 CPUs except for the Core i7-4960X Ivy Bridge Extreme Edition that was having issues with this encryption test.

With John The Ripper's Blowfish test, the FX-9590 was faster than the Core i5 4670 but behind the Core i7 models. The FX-8350 was performing faster than the FX-9590, which is odd given that both CPUs were on water cooling so there should have been no thermal issues that would have led the FX-9590 to being down-clocked, but out thermal and power data later this week should shed some more light on the matter.
