Open-Source AMD Fusion Driver Stabilizes

Although the open-source Fusion support is finally reliable for daily usage -- though if you're after any semi-intense OpenGL experience, the performance is far too slow -- this support for now is living in just the latest code. Before you have a clean "out of the box" experience for open-source Fusion hardware will be Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 16, etc. This Fusion TTM memory management fix may be back-ported though to the Linux 2.6.38 kernel in some of the recent distributions like Ubuntu 11.04 and Fedora 15 as a post-release update but for now most Fusion owners will be left building their own stack or relying upon third-party packages.

The open-source AMD Fusion Linux situation is similar to the Intel Sandy Bridge situation in Ubuntu 11.04, but at least for Fusion there is an easy-to-install proprietary Catalyst driver also available. Now if only the open-source Radeon HD 6000 series support would stabilize... (I still have outstanding bugs against the Northern Islands support.)
