When it comes to the game content, there are seven new maps, two new player characters, new scoreboards, and a new heads-up display. The seven new maps include dm-deimos2k9, dm-warmachine2k9, ctf-frost2k9, dm-invasion, aoa-frost2k9, dm-chasmatic2k9, and dm-command2k9.

Some of the other improvements in Alien Arena 2009 include a realistic Sun object, a Quake 4 style explosion shockwave effect, a type option for vegetation shaders, better culling of grass, and added smoke to explosions.

In total there are 63 changes making up Alien Arena 2009. More information on this free software game is available from the project's web-site. With these new graphics in Alien Arena it is now joining the likes of Sauerbraten, XreaL, and Nexuiz with raising the bar for graphics quality in open-source games.
