Happy 11th Birthday Phoronix! Happy 7th Birthday Phoronix Test Suite!

It was eleven years ago today I founded Phoronix.com to focus on Linux hardware reviews at a time when not only graphics cards were an issue but most PC peripherals were still troublesome to use outside of Windows. Today also marks seven years since the release of Phoronix Test Suite 1.0 for leading open-source Linux benchmarking.

It's been an incredibly long and tiresome journey, but I'm happy to see Phoronix turn eleven years old! In the past eleven years there's been more than 3,000 featured articles / Linux hardware reviews and more than 15,000 original news stories about Linux and open-source software. Phoronix continues to be the largest web destination for Linux hardware reviews and other enthusiast-type news. As most Phoronix readers know, they're mostly penned by me over the years due to the Linux advertising scene not being a large market especially for those catering to Linux gamers and enthusiasts, hence not a large payroll for writers. Additionally, the extreme usage of AdBlock only hurts matters. At least this summer I'm happy to have Eric Griffith onboard in contributing some great articles so far as this year's Phoronix intern.

Over the past year, my highlight when it comes to Phoronix has certainly been the new features and progress that continues to be made with the Phoronix Test Suite and Phoromatic in becoming the standard for Linux benchmarking. A ton of new features were added to our open-source benchmarking software over the past year, new companies doing large-scale deployments of the Phoronix Test Suite, etc. For the next year, there's only a ton more planned for this open-source, cross-platform benchmarking software! While writing so much single-handedly can get tiresome, the Phoronix Test Suite remains my blazing passion and the overall Phoronix mission of enriching the Linux hardware experience.

My favorite moment of the past year was likely the turning of my basement into a massive server room in what's now powering the LinuxBenchmarking.com test farm and serving as a large reference deployment of the Phoronix Test Suite and Phoromatic capabilities. Over at LinuxBenchmarking.com are daily benchmarks of the mainline Linux kernel, GCC, and LLVM Clang, among other upstream projects to come.

In the twelfth year of Phoronix we can also look forward to SteamOS and Steam Machines finally getting ready for the masses, a ton of exciting new hardware that should be Linux-friendly (Intel Skylake, AMD Fiji + Carrizo, NVIDIA Pascal, etc), and numerous other Linux hardware and software milestones should be reached.
