PC-BSD developers have worked out some May Day releases of the first release candidate to PC-BSD 10.1.2 and they've also released a new version of their custom Lumina Desktop.

It's been just over one year now that PC-BSD has been developing their own desktop, Lumina. Out today is Lumina 0.8.4, which brings some sizable improvements. Lumina 0.8.4 has mouse tracking support for the panel, support for variable-length panels, search functionality built into the Insight file manager, a new "favorites" system backend, a new file information utility (lumina-fileinfo), a cleanup of their XCB library usage, new clock display formats, many other code clean-ups, and much more.

You can find more about today's Lumina 0.8.4 update via this PCBSD.org blog announcement.

Also being announced today is PC-BSD 10.1.2-RC1, the first release candidate for PC-BSD's next quarterly update. Besides packaging Lumina 0.8.4, this new version adds a new PersonaCrypt utility for moving user home directories off to an encrypted USB drive that can be easily transported to another system, a new log-in stealth move, Tor mode improvements, sound configuration within the first-boot utility, a new HTML handbook, all ports now use LibreSSL rather than OpenSSL, and there's many package updates. More details on today's PC-BSD 10.1.2 test release can also be found at the PCBSD.org blog.
