Oracle's OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 RC1 Makes It Out
While last month several OpenOffice.org members had left the free software office suite project to form LibreOffice and The Document Foundation, there's no signs that OpenOffice.org is going away anytime soon; Oracle has just announced the first release candidate for the upcoming OpenOffice.org 3.3.0.
As mentioned in the 3.3.0 RC1 release notes, this development milestone of OpenOffice.org incorporates several fixes and other features. Among the improvements to be found with OpenOffice.org 3.3 include an improved extension manager, spreadsheet improvements, initial integration with the Renaissance Project, printing restructuring, and improved Calc spreadsheet performance.
While not making it in time for OpenOffice.org 3.3, other planned features (according to their Wiki) for a future release are SVG import support, new spreadsheet functions, an initial implementation of the XLSX export filter, improvements to the OpenOffice.org Writer comparison feature, XForms enhancements, an XHTML import filter, and simpler items like the ability to rotate images in Writer.
The first release candidate of OpenOffice.org 3.3 can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org. The release date for OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 RC2 or the final version is not known at this time.
