STANDARDS
The latest industry standard unveiled today at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco is the EGL 1.5 specification from the Khronos Group.

Being announced a short time ago after the WebCL 1.0 announcement was of EGL version 1.5, the interface between the Khronos Rendering APIs and the windowing system. EGL is commonly used by mobile devices but now with Mir and Wayland the EGL API is used in place of GLX. Additionally, EGL can be used by the X.Org Server and is supported by the various graphics drivers, most recently with NVIDIA's binary Linux driver.

The EGL 1.5 update supports EGLImage objects as core functionality, robustness support, enhanced support for 64-bit platforms, new EGL Platform extensions, enhanced OpenCL interoperability, EGL fence sync objects as core functionality, support for sRGB color-space rendering with OpenGL ES, and various other changes.

The new EGL Platform extensions added to version 1.5 of the Khronos Group specification is for Android, GBM, Wayland, and X11. These extensions define how each platform/OS interact with EGL to allow the single EGL implementation to support the different windowing systems.

More details on EGL 1.5 can be found via the press release announcement at Khronos.org.
