LINUX GAMING
While a lot of people are fretting today over a minor reduction in the head count at Valve Software (as I was quick to say yesterday on Twitter, I'm not worried), there is some good Valve-related Linux news to report. Garry's Mod, the sandbox physics game built atop Valve's Source Engine, will soon be released for Linux.

Garry's Mod is a rather intriguing sandbox physics "game" built on the Source Engine. The game began as a Half-Life 2 mod before being spun into its own standalone game that's distributed over Steam. The game has long been available for Windows and Mac OS X, but soon will be released for Linux.

Craig Gwilt who is involved with Garry's Mod says for Linux, "we are planning to release soon" according to a private email. Thanks to Phoronix reader Thomas "V10lator" for the tip.

This news shouldn't be a big surprise considering the number of Source Engine titles coming to Linux recently. Valve's been bringing even the original Half-Life and Counter-Strike to Linux. When everything is said and done, you will see a far majority (if not all) of Valve's in-house game catalog be available on Linux. This is important for their Linux-based console plans. Valve is pushing their top game studio partners to Linux too.

More good Linux stuff coming.
