A Significant Release Of DragonFlyBSD Coming Up
A new version of DragonFlyBSD 3.2 is expected by month's end and it will possess several new features.
DragonFlyBSD 3.2 was branched this morning as the developers of this BSD operating system prepare to release the new version on the 22nd of October. The branching announcement was made by Justin Sherrill today on the project's mailing list.
As he wrote recently on his blog, DragonFlyBSD 3.2 is turning out to be a more significant release than he originally anticipated.
DragonFlyBSD 3.2 will offer kernel scheduler improvements, new GCC compiler work, and a port of the FreeBSD USB stack. Porting the FreeBSD USB stack to DragonFlyBSD allows for USB 3.0 support and other new features. The 2012Q3 version of pkgsrc is what Sherrill's anticipating for this next release.
In other DragonFlyBSD news, there's now a DragonFlyDebian project that aims to provide the DragonFlyBSD kernel paired with the Debian GNU user-space. This is just like the Debian GNU/kFreeBSD port that runs Debian on the FreeBSD kernel rather than the Linux kernel, but this new work that's happening independent of the Debian project is for using the DragonFlyBSD kernel. However, there's still a long TODO list, including the first action item of making the kernel compile.
