Linux 3.2-rc6: People Are Gaming My Release

LINUX KERNEL
X.Org Server 1.11.3 wasn't the only new piece of open-source software to be released on Friday, but Linus Torvalds also put out the Linux 3.2-rc6 kernel.

This latest test release of the Linux 3.2 kernel brings various bug/regression fixes, although Linus did let RC6 power-savings support slip in.

In announcing the 3.2-rc6 kernel, Linus warned that the developers are gaming his release timing. "Ok, people have clearly figured out and are gaming my release timing, because over half the commits in -rc6 were merged today. And that's purely because I got more merge requests today than I got the rest of the week.."

While this is upsetting to a release manager, he's thinking that a 3.2-rc7 kernel will be the last test release. This means the final Linux 3.2 kernel is likely to land at the very end of the year or right at the beginning of 2012. A New Year's Eve release wouldn't be out of the question for Linus.

A few of the features of this next kernel release are talked about in this article.
