Default Coming Soon: Catalyst Control Center - Linux Edition

Hi,

I am new to your forums. Well, I have to bring you an exciting news: Catalyst Control Center - Linux Edition is coming soon. The Windows version of it has been redone and a Linux version of it is coming soon. Maybe in february, maybe later this year.

I don't know whether this was a decition made by AMD, but they seem to want to improve their Linux support. I always had trouble with the fglrx driver like freezes. And this step shows that AMD maybe wants to improve the linux driver overall, because the perfomance isn't excellent as well.

Greetings from Germany,

- d2kx

LMAO...well said. Knowing ATI's response times for driver-related fixes, I think we should expect something like this *at least* a year from now.

A Linux version of Catalyst Control Center (built using Qt) will show up in a few months too, although it doesn't share any code (currently) with the Windows version. The plan is to have functional equivalence before the end of the year.

Maybe we'll see something before the summer? Interestingly, the article does mention that the OpenGL rewrite (Orca) is part of the 7.1 drivers for Vista

It's unlikely that it would be completed prior to the summer... Though not confirmed, it will likely be a graphical version of the options found in aticonfig.

Don't hold your breath (though I also secretly wish they've cleaned up their act and sped-up their driver development)...

i'm really thinking about throwing out my current X1300 card from my pc and inserting back the old one x300se.

even though is's a much slower card, it is getting nearly fully supported via opensource driver. i'm getting really fed up with ati's fglrx recently, esp on amd64 system :]

and if their new control center is going to be the same kind of memory hog as on windows, i won't be having second thoughts.
