  • 7.11 Resolution Issues

    OK, I've been fighting with ATI/fglrx/compiz for a while now, and I can usually get it mostly working.

    I started a new job and decided to stick Kubuntu on the machine provided. (It was a pre-installed dual-screen vista machine). The machine has an ATI Technologies Inc RV516 [Radeon X1300/X1550 Series]

    Now, I had it running fine on a single screen using 8.42 and Xgl, although I did have a second screen (that remained Decorator-less) that I used for specific applications (fullscreen firefox for example). It wasn't quite how I wanted it, but it was functional, and both screens were 1280x1024.

    I installed 7.11 drivers and with a bit of messing around managed to get it running using AIGLX, Compositing and no Xgl (yay). And even better, it's now running just fine on dual-head. BUT, the resolution of each screen is now 1024x768. Xorg.0.log doesn't even show 1280x1024 as an option for either screen, let alone 2560x1024 as an option for bigdesktop.

    Does the 7.11 not have the full range of resolutions available?

    Any pointers in the right directiong greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need any logs/configs etc...


    OK, further research indicates it's a bug with fglrx not reading EDID information correctly when in a dualhead configuration: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=160

    Anyone know of a workaround, or anything, or should I twiddle my thumbs until it's looked at...

    OK, after further research, I think my problem is addressed in the following bug:



    It's basically reading the EDID data incorrectly (it thinks my 19" LG Flatron L1920P's were made in 1990)
    and not getting any modes better that 1024x768 - it even ignores modelines.

    Not sure if anyone can suggest anything, or if I just have to twiddle my thumbs and make do with a lower resolution than I would like until someone gets around to fixing the bug...

      I also get the same issue.
      ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]

      17" AL1916W (1440x900)
      19" LG Flatron (1680x1050)

      EDID gives nothing but 1024x768.

        Sadly not - I'm hoping it's a bug that will be addressed in the next driver release...

        if not, I'm keeping an eye on radeonHD

          more x1300 issues

          Same problem here on a RV516 with two 19" lcd's on vga connectors. Anyone have an nvidia card they'd like to trade for an x1300?

            Same problem with the new 7.12 drivers....Still edid only detects 1024x768. Interestingly enough VESA seems to be smarter then fglrx as it can do 1280x1024 on the same hardware.
