The X Server 1.6 release schedule called for the first release candidate to come about two weeks after the second beta. We ended up getting a third beta but more than two weeks have now passed and there is no X Server 1.6 release candidate available...

I still think X.Org Foundation needs to be a lot more in terms of funding, man power (specially more developers and a a bunch of proffessional betatesters) and organization.

They also need a LOT BETTER management at the documentation and PR, their site is outdated and a damn mess.

X.Org Server is very important in *NIX the industry, they must force a lot more involvement in both financial and development stuff by all companies and organizations that makes use of it in some way. There's a need of more developers and funding so the project can evolve faster so becoming a lot more competitive.

I think X.Org Server must be a lot more competitive and flexible, even becoming totally competitive in the embedded world. Just look at Linux, it's a success because it runs everywhere and can be adapted to all kind of market segments.

Still, things are improving. The number of project contributors has increased a lot in the latest six months.

One of the challenges right now is that a lot of the work being done in the graphics framework is outside what has traditionally been considered the scope of x.org.

The 3D (mesa/drm) part of the driver was traditionally considered "optional" from an X perspective since so many of the users were primarily interested in 2D, and in some ways that has still not changed, but the introduction of things like Compiz, KMS and the trend towards using the 3D engine for 2D drawing means that a lot of the work gating xorg (and even x server) releases is now done outside of "classic xorg".
