Phoronix: MeeGo Is Starting To Be Usable On The Nokia N900

The Nokia N900 mobile-phone was released nearly one year ago with the Linux-based Maemo 5 operating system, but earlier this year is when Nokia and Intel decided to combine their Linux-based Maemo and Moblin operating systems, respectively, to form MeeGo. The MeeGo Linux distribution is now running well on Intel Atom netbooks and other devices and there is is even MeeGo IVI for your car and a MeeGo handset preview. However, support for the N900 within MeeGo hasn't been up to speed compared to the level of Maemo support or that of other devices playing well with MeeGo. The support though is slowly but surely catching up for the Nokia N900...

I'm also tempted by the N900... my N800 is showing its age
What stopped my from buying it was the discontinuation of Maemo since it made the N900 a dead line from SW point of view...
Now with MeeGo running I'm tempted again, but I fear that the HW is almost obsolete: I'll probably wait the next product (N9?)

same here, it's the only phoning device which looks like not a waste of money for a decade i was waiting for something like this. my nokia 1100 starting to die off and that's the only thing with price >50$ that worth its money by being not a bloated, overpriced shitty-"feature"-ridden battery-wasting piece of shit like all the other "smartphones", "tablets", "PDA" or whatever marketoids call them.
you know, a real computer which phones and respects FOSS rules & user benefits.

but possible features of tv-out/monitor/projector out (hdmi? composite?), high quality camera and bluetooth 3 of upcoming model (N9?) are also tempting. it will be no-go if its Symbian-based however

Well of course I'll go for it only if it's MeeGo based and allows the use of custom kernels
