  • Lucid + radeon + Radeon HD 4670 = crash --> [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence

    Hi,

I did a clean install of the first Lucid Beta on my PC with a Radeon HD 4670 a few weeks ago and I am experiencing several randomly crashs a day. Crash means: I normally work on my PC (surfing, office, no gaming) and then suddenly X stops working... all I see then is a blank blinking screen with some striped artefacts and my cursor... blinking on and off and on and ...
I can ssh into the PC and when looking at dmesg I find this messages:
    Code:
    [ 4752.331431] [drm:radeon_fence_wait] *ERROR* fence(ffff88005f5f8d00:0x00027D00) 510ms timeout going to reset GPU

    [ 4752.567394] radeon 0000:01:00.0: GPU softreset
    and so on.

    All updates are installed.

Now: does someone have an idea what that could mean? Is this a known bug that I should have noticed?

Any help would be great :-)

mmm ubuntu kernel have many bugs rigth now cuz they are backporting the drm of the 2.6.33 kernel, report it in ubuntu.

now if your hardware is fine, upgrade those ubuntu packages using Xorg crackers and a nice 2.6.34 rc kernel (ironically this rc kernel is more stable than ubuntus lol and you gain better pm)

    download the kernel from here

and add this repo to your synaptic

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

i realize this sound to be a little on the edge but in all my pc including my laptop this works like a charm, so i dont think you get too much problems

      Thanks for the suggestion.
For now I only have installed the mentioned mainline kernel but most probably will try the xorg-edgers PPA later too.

Binary package hint: xorg X stopped functioning showing only garbage and a mouse pointer on screen. Ctrl-Alt-Del successfully rebooted the system. I'm attaching kern.log, look at line 3968 and further. So far it has only happened once and I recently pulled in the latest week's upgrades for Lucid, including a kernel upgrade from .19 to .21. ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: xorg 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Lin...

I would get this too. My solution was to remove plymouth, and now no crashes..

I installed the xorg-edgers PPA now too and it looks somewhat stable for now. Hopefully it is in the long term :-)

I've been running Lucid + Xorg-edgers PPA for a while now (couple months) and have occasionally had stability issues... Last night, after reading this thread I finally grabbed a copy of the 2.6.34-rc5 mainline kernel and tried booting that.

Things seem good so far, and after running the PTS Mesa test suite, I'm amazed how far the r600 driver has come (on my 4770). Most tests were running >= 50fps *before* I disabled my 2nd monitor (PTS definitely looks weird when it's testing across a 1680*1050 + 1280*1024 combination).

This morning I gave padman, tremulous, and nexuiz a test run with only the 1680*1050 monitor enabled, and I'm positive that I could play those games just fine without issues.

My only current issue that I'm trying to figure out is that sometimes the machine keeps the monitors blank coming out of sleep mode. The kernel still responds to MagicKeys requests, but I haven't really gotten a chance to try to debug it yet.
