Phoronix: High-End NVIDIA GeForce vs. AMD Radeon Linux Gaming Comparison

After last week carrying out separate NVIDIA Windows vs. Linux OpenGL benchmarks and similar AMD Radeon Windows 8.1 vs. Ubuntu 14.04 tests, today we are pitting the GeForce and Radeon graphics cards against each other on Ubuntu Linux with the very latest drivers to see how their performance compares now head-on. With this testing we have some Steam games plus are also monitoring the power consumption, performance-per-Watt, and GPU thermal metrics.

How about a mining benchmark? There are opencl miners out there and also cuda-only ones. While nvidia used to be quite slow for scrypt, it seems to be much faster for X11 based coins.

not that sad for germans. the cheapest 290 retails here for 300 ?, while the cheapest 770 in the same store is 280? while having 2GB RAM less. cheapest 4GB 770 is 340?!!!

Yep and here in in east europe cheapest price are the same for both GTX 770 4GB and R9 290 4GB it is 360€ right now . Cheapest GTX 770 with 2GB can be found for slightly below 300€. Most expensive models of both are also the same at around 420 €. Cheapest R9 290X is 410€, etc... .

But yeah GTX 770 4GB and R9 290 4GB are clearly in the same pricetag here .

What matters is performance, not VRAM size.

290 is literally a power hog compared to the 770, not to mention the noise and temperature issues.

770 is declared as 230W and 290 as 275W TDP devices, so that is only 15% difference... they are both power hogs .

While I appreciate and understand what you're saying with regards to performance, VRAM is now a factor in high end gaming. A few of the modern games recommend 3gb to have high res textures on Windows. I just purchased a 770, and went for the 4gb version exactly for this reason.

While 2gb may be enough for Linux today, if you're forward thinking then 4gb is going to last you longer than 2gb (at whatever performance level you're going for as long as it's fairly high end). 2gb would already limit you if you want high-res textures on some recent games on Windows. That is if what the devs say is true, I haven't ruled out the possibility that they said that to shift AMD cards, many of which have 3gb, whereas most Nvidia other than the 780 go for 2gb, with a 4gb option.
