show me the linux game thats needs a gtx580 or an Programm.
My Cuda code loves it, nothing like having cuda accelerated encoding (with vdpau support as well doing the source decoding) video editing in linux, not to mention the financial numbers it is able to crunch on our financial software, works very well in Maya as Pro/E as well. Mathamatica loves cuda as well. Some people actually do more then post gibberish on forums and download porn on linux. Of course wine works great as well.

      GTX goodness

      Hi Yall and Dean,

Having started off with Matrox cards, on SuSe, back in the 1990's, I've run the gauntlet, of FGLRX hell (note the forums on Suse, rage3d & hereabouts) and keep coming back to nVida. I've got a GTX 470 now.

Dean, what video editing software do you use in Linux? Is it able to use all the cpu cores and the gpu? I'm very tempted by "PowerDirector 9" for Win7-64bit. I've got a boat load of video to upload to Youtube and wanna take full advantage of my Phenom X6 1090T (Ocd to 4000 of course! ;-) ).

I'd much rather prefer to do this in Linux, with a "intuitive" gui, but if the best tool for the job (for me!), is in a Doze environment, then I will bite that bullet.

I actually have created my own rudimentary editing app that I use for my HD HDR recordings since not one editing app in linux can handle it's output properly. They all want to cut on a full GOP which is a royal pain when you want to edit out commercials on a h264 TS stream.

          Hi Dean & Yall,

all good. We have a whole bunch of dharma talks, that has been shot in "medium" res, put onto DVD and now will be uploaded onto YouTube.

I've been using Kdenlive & DVD-styler. Kudos to those guys!

All the best for your vid work & thanks for sharing data on The GTX 580.

I might yet bend my own rubber arm and upgrade to one of those in Jan 2011. I'm picking there will be a price drop soonish and we are just cycling into summer down hereabout. I like the idea of a cool and silent pc.

You can start with the SDK

i do not use maya i like Blender
That's not my problem but the video card handles complex models in Blender.

i my knowelege mathematica is not so good in multicore usage.
LMAO, ok you don't know much then.

"Some people actually do more then post gibberish on forums and download porn on linux."

oh well posting on phoronix is useless right but porn is very importand you know? porn in stereoscopic and porn in super 4K super quality the you can zooom in on the RIGHT place without any qualiy loss on your display

" the Internet is for porn" *sing*
Some of us don't need porn, we make our own.

"Of course wine works great as well."

really? can you test arma2 OA for me ? if you can play this game i maybe buy an nvidia card
Could care less about one specific game. Games are not a high priority of mine but when I hanker for a game of Starcraft 2, Dragons Age, The Witcher I play them with ease.

Sure there is, getting windows cuda apps isn't that hard to get going in wine.

uuhhh is that an nvidia only feature ? i don't think so.
Never said it was nvidia only feature.
thats only that what i read in the web.,

but yes maybe time chance things.
You must be using the internet archive again to do your reading.
show me that the nvidia card is perfect for producing porn
Any card can show porn. Some of us however don't need porn for a healthy sex life.
                you don't get the point.
Because you have no points. Just your usual trolling.

last time i checked one of your games Starcraft2 for exampel it runs much better on my amd card than on my nvidia test card.
So you have a GTX-580 then now too? If not then again, you have no point.

yes arma2 is just an exampel but in my tests nvidia isn't better in wine support.

i don't test "Dragons Age, The Witcher"
See you still have no point. If you can't match my uses then really what qualifications do you have that makes you think you know all the answers for my purchase?
but my point is wine isn't magic magic writen for wine
There is nothing magic about wine.

wine still have many problems and this kind of problems don't care about your graphic card exampel "mouse escape windows bug"
Haven't ran across that as my games I run full screen since my card can easily handle it with full eyecandy.

Seriously Q, I was trying to keep this a clean thread for posting the results as there are people that want to see them. I guess I'll start another thread. Please be polite enough to fuck off from it so that it isn't filled with your babble. You have zero experience with this product and as such have absolutely nothing valuable to contribute to the subject.

Please keep buying your AMD cards and posting your experiences with them in the appropriate forums. Please for the love of all of mankind DO NOT BUY AN NVIDIA CARD!!! I'm serious, it's bad enough that you come in here to babble on incoherently but I shutter of the idea of you becoming an actual member of the nvidia community. It would make the forums completely useless for people that actually are trying to inform other members of community of something that may interest them.

Hmmm Cuda apps that I have running in wine, lets start with vReveal and mediacoder, before that there was also items like Folding@home before they had a native linux client.

                  only nvidia only features count
I gave you a huge list of apps that I use already in the first post

talking about your reallife sex in an technical forum is trolling...
Nope. Read back to the initial post the comment was saying that some people have more to do with their hardware then post useless posts and surf porn.

i really don't need an gtx580 to test the nvidia hardware support.

i also don't thest this on an hd5970 there is no need for an highend card for just test an wine app

i test this with an openGL3 card geforce 8600... this is more than wine use
Oh really, your 1000% bullshitting as anyone that has tried those apps in wine know that they are demanding on the graphics card. I suppose if you consider "running a game" in a 800x600 window with all details turned down then your 8600 and/or ATI card is fine.

??? what do i need for an qualifikation to test an app in wine on hardware ? ?
Some actual experience with it with the product and it's capabilities to make any kind of educated comment or observation.
ZERO--- but yes i need to have an software studie for an nvidia card... right..
                  See above comment
really ? but the wine support of nvidia is magic magic better than the wine support of amd..

give an real exampel for that. i get you exampels against that point.

but you are so big in arrogance you don'T need sources and realworld exampels.
No arrogance here, just tired of your constant babble of no value.

keep this clean means any critical voices are banned ?
No it means if you have nothing of value to add on the topic at hand keep the fuck out.

you don't give me an realworld enduser cuda app and you don't give me an single exampel about an realworld exampel why nvidia is better in wine support and you can not give me an single exampel of an realworld game thats need the power of an gtx580 and runs on linux an negativ exampel is arma2 arma2 needs the power but don'T run in linux also don't run on an nvidia in wine.
lmfao, Arma2's system requirements are no higher then many other games and it is hardly the most demanding.

an GTX580 is complete useless for consumers in linux... maybe you an DEV can use this card in CUDA.. right..
It's hardly useless but it is not a card for everyone that is for sure. Most people just need a lowly intel IGP for their uses. Their uses however do not match my uses nor the uses of many others. Not everyone is running at higher resolutions either? Do you consider higher resolutions useless as well? Not every needs to overclock, so overclocking you would consider useless as well? What about eyefinity, guess that's useless to. Not everybody has the same requirements. What one person does on their machine is often different then anothers and being as such have different requirements and features needed. You make the point of saying pointing out I am a dev, so yes my requirements are different then an average user. I also don't spend a lot of time in chat rooms, facebag, ebay, etc but I actually do work on my machines. I don't know if you noticed it but there are a shitload of "DEV's" in the linux community and probably has a higher "Dev:User" ratio then most OS's.

To you, it seems, Arma2 is the end all and be all for your requirements. That's fine and stick with what works for your needs but don't assume that because you don't need the performance or a feature that others don't.

i really should buy an nvidia card just because to face you how bad nvidia really is [/QUOTE]

I've got representatives of all cards readily at hand. I don't need you to tell me what my experience is.

Well running cuda apps with wine is a bit tricky, you have to set the card name via wine option and compile a special lib. I did that once for f@h, but not recently. Can you show me a current howto?
