People with laptops among other things?
Conserving energy in general though isn't bad in any way, the opposite. But I doubt lowering RAM usage does much on this anyway.

Why would it be? 4GB of RAM consume more than 1GB of RAM.

Please don?t answer. It is just a rethorical question.

4 GB RAM consume 1.6 Watt, which is irrelevant.

we are not talking about memory installed in the system, we are talking about MEMORY USAGE! and no, memory usage has no messurable impact on your power consumption.

and it does so no matter if programs are using it or not and THIS was the point of discussion, not how much memory you have installed

              Special K

For me KDE has always had too much "special K".

Though these days Gnome developers are making it harder and harder to use it. I hate the new Nautilus (well, mainly the missing status bar). Luckily there is Nemo available.

Some day soon I may have to switch from Gnome to something else. Maybe Cinnamon or XFCE.

if only other OS users knew of the stress and pain we go through in order to select our desktop environments or window managers!

but honestly i do not care about memory consumption. i have memory to be used. i do care about cpu usage and power consumption.
VIRT RES SHR %CPU %MEM COMMAND
                  1848m 218m 31m 0.3 2.8 gnome-shell

Considering that my workstation has 8GB, I think it's doing acceptably.

Only output from command free is relevant.

I guess I'm still doing ok, then..

                      Code:
total used free shared buffers cached
                      Mem: 8133108 3799604 4333504 0 145124 2006644
                      -/+ buffers/cache: 1647836 6485272
                      Swap: 8342524 0 8342524
