Phoronix: Another Benefit To Kernel Mode-Setting

Kernel mode-setting (KMS) is useful for faster VT/X switching, VTs being always at the panel's native resolution, the ability to thwart some security bugs in the X.Org Server (as shown earlier this week), presenting a cleaner and more flexible architecture, and allowing new and interesting projects to emerge (such as Plymouth and Wayland), but the benefits do not end there. When kernel mode-setting is combined with KDB, a Linux kernel debugger shell, you now have one powerful combination...

I would like to watch the video but it's been delivered in a proprietary format. Very disappointing to see that Phoronix is still promoting vendor lock-in such as this--especially since WebM is now an option.

Although it would be welcome, you don't have to embed the video HTML-5-style if it's too much work to get the pages to validate as valid HTML 5. However, please at least link to content that is available in an open, free-software-friendly format. Seriously, Phoronix of all sites should be helping to free the web, not lock it down further.

Especially when it's so easy to use flash as a fallback. Phoronix might not be able to afford the bandwidth though. They're using an offsite video host, and I don't know if there are any that support using video tags for embedding offsite.

This should get you the video in WebM:
A lightning fast demonstration of using kgdb kdb and kernel mode setting

(Or if not, enter YouTubes HTML5 beta and try again)

Phoronix could just use http://apiblog.youtube.com/2010/07/n...be-videos.html to embed the videos.

YouTube is fine, thank you. Please don't change it. It's the only thing that works reliably everywhere.

Come on, isn't this a bit early for a pro-HTML5 campaign? Let's wait a few months and see how many browsers support the video tags then in released versions.

bliptv already supports serving videos in both html5 video and flash, doesn't it?

best-case scenario would be videos switching to html5 but ads staying flash, although i doubt that will happen
