Phoronix: Tiling Support For AMD's RadeonSI Gallium3D Driver

As a potential performance-boosting addition, the "RadeonSI" Linux driver for open-source support of the AMD Radeon HD 7000/8000 series graphics cards now has patches for supporting tiling...

    Hi people.
Do these patches also affect 2d performance? I have a HD 7870 card and the 2d performance using glamor is not good at all.

Really? I don't have an SI, but the radeon 5400 in my work machine using glamor was acceptable. How do you define not good?

Also, just as background, could you post your xorg.log, dmesg, and glxinfo output somewhere (such as pastebin) and link it here?

The 7xxx driver is probably still imature. I think tiling mostly affects textures where effects has to be applied. But it could provide some speed up for desktop use.

Is there any PPA or something to easily test the radeonsi driver(s)?

Unlikely. It might even slow down rendering overall, because software fallback paths are slower due to untiling and retiling required for CPU access.

Prob not. I'm running ArchLinux so it is fairly easy with AUR

Scrolling pages in Firefox and Chromium is slow. When scrolling fast enough, it creates a visible horizontal tearing in the page. Even selecting a block of text using mice is a bit laggy. Artifacts.

                  Sure.
