Interesting that you want to use Ubuntu. I always thought what things on Fedora are better. Yum is slower, non-free harder. It has real software updates! (I use Sidux based on Debian/sid with KDE)

I don't know what you mean with Fedora R2. I hope that these issues with Fedora are not Xorg related... I want proper, non-hacked Xorg Server 1.3 Support!

They are not X.Org related and I will explain more in the very near future

Are you trying to say that you are going to drop Fedora in favor of Ubuntu just because AMD can't get their act together? Before I drop Fedora I'll drop AMD/ATI and rely on Intel and nvidia.

Seems to me that, lately, AMD can't do nothing right. Look at their 2000 series graphic cards, which for most of it is vaporware. Look at Barcelona, lots of talk and not much to show.

No no, not at all. I had basically combined two different topics into one post. Even when I do switch to Ubuntu on my main system I will still gladly maintain the Fedora packaging scripts for AMD and of course Fedora will still be used at Phoronix and everything like that. I was just mentioning a personal switch.

fedora 7

i tried feisty and was mildly impressed. fedora still wins out IMHO mainly in the details. much better networking/tools (samba/ldap/gui tools), and other little glitches like bugs/not using lvm. i was pretty impressed with ubuntu as a simple start for basic users. I was forced to move back to fedora test 4 now rc2.

ill have another look with ubuntu 8 - nice to see they are going to enable compiz by default for certain cards - each to their own etc, and looking pretty exciting for the fute...

more relevantly my question: Im not enormously technical, but from what you say ati are about to release a version of drivers at the same time as fedora 7 but have incorporated in some way a bug that makes it unuseable for the same... but ... that it will work with older versions e.g. fc6?

See my review of F7 Test 4 on my website (www.partha.com). I have stated there that fglrx will not work with the current version of xorg due to the numbering scheme and therefore a version mismatch. are you saying that there are new drivers that will?

The numbering scheme is no longer the problem... there is a new problem with fglrx and Fedora 7. It's mentioned in an upcoming Phoronix article and I will elaborate on it more in the forums once permitted.

Okay, here's the scoop on Fedora 7. WIth AMD fixing the X 1.3 problem, the drivers will build. However, when you install the RPMs for Fedora 7, aticonfig will crash and will remove your xorg.conf (though the original is renamed). If you manually update your xorg.conf and then restart X, fglrx will fail to load and you'll find a backtrace in your Xorg.0.log. So if you need the fglrx drivers to survive, don't upgrade to Fedora 7 just yet. Stay tuned to the forums for more information. This issue with 8.37 should not cause problems with Fedora Core 6 or previous versions.

And here I sit with an X1300 in my Dell, with two 24" LCDs connected to it, unable to use any of it, because I foolishly installed Fedora 7. *sigh* Guess it's time to downgrade.
