As far as I have read the gnome shell will be in Lucid+1. But I think chances are high it will not be very complete or bugfree, like KDE4 wasn't. It will probably take a couple of iterations before it will be good (if you like the new design at all, which I don't). Isn't this true for all software?

Lucid listed Compiz 0.8.4 last time I checked. I hope this will be made available through some PPA.

For all its deficiencies, Compiz tends to be faster, more featureful and more robust than either KWin4 or Mutter (gnome-shell). Its main issue is the lack of proper vsync.

True. When I wiggle a wobbly window, I can easily see tearing in the borders. This is on karmic, with different nvidia cards running the 195.36.15 driver, both 64 and 32 bit.

I did enable the vsync settings anywhere I could: in the nvidia-settings panel, and in the compiz configuration.

So what is the conclusion? Is vsync only not working in some aspects of compiz, because in movies I see no tearing?

It's probably due to partial screen updates. Even if tearing is avoided for each individual rectangle being updated, there can still be a tearing effect between rectangles.
