Unfortunately, closed sourced pc gaming suffers, too, from console gaming. So, the phrase "both platforms" indeed needs modification.

See how the aging titles still dominate the pc chart? It is not good, for Linux gaming either.

        Wii Sports is funny.
If every new PC came with Barbie Horse Adventures, Barbie Horse Adventures would outsell Wii Sports by a long shot.

I bet MS Solitaire has outsold Wii Sports too.

On topic, I'm confused too. These numbers don't really related to Linux gaming. Xbox sales can't really be compared to Linux sales.

I think the point was that console game sales were a lot higher than PC game sales... not counting Barbie Horse Adventures, of course.

hmmm PC games, imo, are invincible by its complexity and interactivity over lan/internet. It's true to say that on Console you can play up to 4 ppl in the same time, but the console games don't give much pleasure/fun. Well that's my opinion (i've only played 10 times on different consoles).

              Ok, sorry for understating.

              Pos/Sales/Release Date/Last Update/Game

Pos is for position in "game sales" world wide.
Sales is how many copies were actually sold
Release date is... the date when the game was released
Last update is when the information was last updated
Game is a misnomer for Publisher (my fault).

              So

              1 The Sims
              /16.08m /31st Jan 00 /26th Jun 09/Maxis

refers to the game The Sims with 16.08 million games sold. The game sold more than any other pc game even if released nine years ago. But, it is outsold by Wii Sports which was released in 2006, and has since then sold 47 million copies.

The data shows that the lion part of the game business revenues are today made in the console arena, rather than for the pc (or the mac). I didn't include the sales figured for the Nintendo DS or the PSP... That does not bode good for closed sourced Linux gaming, as it largely depends on the same hardware as pc games.

Not being too simplistic, I don't think of this as the demise of pc gaming, or Linux gaming. I just wanted too highlight that porting pc games to Linux today probably is not as prioritized as it could have been or indeed was ten years ago (think id Software). The landscape has changed.

I'm happy with Urban Terror, Nexuiz, etc. But, YES, I would love to see prime titles like Batman Arkham Asylum etc showing up on Linux too. When will we see:

              for pc/mac/linux/wii/xbox/ps3

              ???

that's not something new tbh. Console market has grown since middle 90s... linux gaming quite "new", if i may say so, compared to others gaming platforms of course...

yea, kuz people steal more on PC. way easier. Xbox has its problems now, not that easy but my friend makes quite the coin off mod consoles. Still significantly easier to use a PC. Sometimes its easier to steal it for PC then to actually go and buy it for PC...

Do note for the Wii, a Wii owner usually will buy most of the games for the wii, just because so few actually exist . And wii sports comes in the Wii bundle so the 41m is kinda, well, different.

I personally game on a PC because if i want any chance of gaming with people over the age of 12, that's my best bet. Who is going to buy more games? Prolly the parents for their children. The numbers make clear sense. This can be further backed up by displaying how so many shooters are on console platforms. Anyone who has tried both knows that fixed speed crosshairs are lame. its all children.

juz a short piece. brought to you once again by L33F3R.
