Phoronix: Adobe Still Shafts Linux With H.264 GPU Decoding

Adobe rolled out a security update to their Flash Player yesterday and for Mac OS X users this update also integrates Gala -- their codename for H.264 GPU video decoding in Flash on Mac OS X. With Adobe Flash Player 10.1.82.76 on Apple Mac OS X there is now GPU video decoding enabled by default to offload more of the playback work to the graphics card, assuming you are using a newer NVIDIA graphics processor. This is coming after Adobe introduced H.264 GPU decoding in their Windows Flash Player 10.1 release, but they continue to shaft Linux users with video support...

I would be more happy for a fully working native 64bit version instead of youtube gpu acceleration.

Making the software decoding path faster would be very nice as well. It's slow as fuck compared to normal media players. And no, excuses like "Flash does more than a media player/solves another problem" don't count. Flash is a lot faster on Windows, even with software rendering.

Canonical should pick one video decoding API, block access to the other APIs within Ubuntu, and inform Adobe which API they'll be using for video acceleration.

since when does canonical represent interests of linux as a whole ? i'd prefer if adobe would just pick the better solution.

Wouldn't it be better to bench mark the old and new flash on OSX

It's the perfect chance to show this site is more than just bitching

Flash sucks anyway. What support linux has from flash is enough until flash dies...

The unidentified portion is mostly Ubuntu users on Chrome, Firefox alphas and betas, and midori. The Debian portion is partially Ubuntu users on Epiphany.

75% of the linux desktop means 3 times the share of all competing platforms COMBINED-- and as we saw with the whole sound thing, if you provide ten developers with ten API choices, they'll all pick different ones for no good reason :P

Well, you KNOW that that'll NEVER happen...
