I'm honestly surprised this hasn't been released 20 years ago. Why did it take so long and who decided this needed to be made now?

Whatever. Thanks to Michael for the heads-up!

well, it's not twenty years, but the ftp archives at http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/xnee/ have versions from back in 2003, and that's probably not the initial release, when you look at the version numbers. Besides, there are similar tools like xmacros or xset which seem to serve the same purpose.

Will this work for Wayland and Mir? How dependent is it on X11?

              It's v. 3.19, not 0.1...

However if we had a news article every time an OSS project bumps a minor version number...

                Lacking

This is what we are lacking in the Linux world, decent Screen Capture tools. The only one I ever found useful and still use today is XVidCap. Nothing we currently have compares to XVidCap where you can resize the capture area to your liking. All the others either record the whole screen or preset parts.

I use XVidCap to capture flash video that can't be downloaded, like Live streams. I wish someone would take a few minutes everyday to fix bugs and code XVidCap to work on newer distros and Pulse Audio. I'd even be willing to pitch in a few $$

No such thing as a video that can't be downloaded. If you can view it, it's being downloaded.

Your cash would be better spent on adding support for your favorite porn site to youtube-dl

Ever tried RecordMyDesktop or VLC? Both allow resizable recording areas, I believe both support multiple recording formats, and both have the option to record audio. They're both decent choices IMO. Also, if you can get the actual live stream to play in VLC, you can record it directly.
