Just FYI, I am not a game developer and not intending to be, so no pirating will happen from my side. I am just trying to understand the difference between the two versions.

Free version = no/less support and no source code of the engine

It's not just support that's different between the free and subsciption-based SDK. New features (like Physically-Based Shading) will only be available to subscribers, the free SDK won't get them (source: http://www.cryengine.com/news/crytek...ervice-program)
