Well ntfs-fuse is the userspace driver from ntfsprogs (maybe call it ntfsprogs driver or what you prefer), ntfs-fuse was just type (-t) for mounting. ntfs-3g uses currently an integrated fuse implementation but both userspace tools need the fuse kernel module - which is in every current kernel.
