I'm getting ready to buy a new home machine, which will be running Mandriva 2008 Spring, and... I do environmental modeling at very high resolution, and find it useful to do very large virtual displays on my monitor, to be able to see (for example) large geographic regions at 30-meter resolution. At work, I'm running a QuadroFX 4500 512MB, with an xorg.conf whose "Screen" section looks like
Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen1"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultColorDepth 24
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1920x1200"
Virtual 2536 2000
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection
(I have used as large as 3200x2560 virtual on some projects; it looks as though anything up to 3840x2560 works...) Workstation QuadroFX and FireGL cards are more expensive than I think I can get my wife to go along with
I'm thinking of going with a Radeon 3870 512MB for the new home machine, but have this question, for which I can't find the answer anywhere on the net: What is the virtual-display limit for the 3870? Will it do my 2536x2000? 3200x2560?
Thanks! -- Carlie Coats
